Every time we write a post, don’t we wish that we have thousands of readers coming to read them? Don’t we wish that everyone would Re-Tweet the post & it would be shared virally? With each such post, not only do you become well known, your blog gets more subscribers but you also get to make more money from advertising.
You win all rounds! So how does one write such a post? Here is what we have experienced with our articles that can give you several ideas to make your’s popular.
10 Tips to Make Your Posts Popular
A popular post is not just about good copywriting. A popular post is an effective blog post that combines facts, statistics, humor & criticisms. It is like a short story that conveys a message with examples.
1. Write what you know the best & write facts
When you write about the subject you know best, you give out facts & the truth. Readers love facts, numbers & statistics. Often in choosing between facts & the truth, readers often love the facts & when these facts are supported by numbers, they tend to become the truth
2. Write with authority & quote others who have same opinions
In your posts you often use thoughts, ideas & opinions you have read somewhere else. Since readers have come to your post searching the internet, when you give them the references & links to others who have expressed similar opinions, you offer a small value to your readers by saving them the time looking for them elsewhere
3. Challenge yourself to create a virtual discussion
Be your reader while writing your post. Think of what the reader would be thinking when they read your article. If your post raises questions, challenge yourself & express your argument both ways so that all the reader’s questions will be answered by the end of your post
4. Use an interesting picture or a video to create your story
A post is like a short story. Most writers don’t use pictures & videos effectively to create their stories. You will find numerous pictures on Flickr (available for use with simple credits) & numerous videos on YouTube that can help you supplement your post with additional humor or content
5. Write for your readers, not for yourself
Each post is like a sales pitch, it has to have something for the reader. Its a good idea to write one post on one topic & keep focused on that. Once done, read your own post & see what it offers you as a readers – does it solve a problem? does it give you that additional information you could not find elsewhere?
6. Link only when necessary
Don’t clutter your post with links, a post is not a link directory. People re-tweet posts that are original & strong on content & usually where there is no hard selling. People especially do not share posts on Twitter or Facebook that have too many links or a series of sales pitches
7. Write something evergreen
“Hot topics” are not always right for everyone to write on. Instead choose some evergreen topics, that do not loose its meaning in a short time. We have seen that such topics become more popular over time than the once that are “current” in nature.
On the other hand, “hot topics” like a great deal, or a paparazzi picture of a Hollywood star, or a rumor about a new Nikon lens get tweeted & retweeted more often than evergreen posts, while they significantly loose readers’ attention in a short while.
8. Opinions matter – make your opinions loud & clear
People are on your blog post to read your opinions. Do not hesitate to share your own opinion, no matter what others might have said elsewhere. This is your chance to be honest or even controversial.
This is especially true if you are offering some sort of a review of a product, like a new Nikon lens for example. The famous photographers might have said something good, but if you have found the opposite, go ahead & voice your opinion.
9. Do not sacrifice your post for SEO
I have seen numerous bloggers do this frequently – write the keywords first, the title second & then frame the post with appropriate keyword density. Its good for search engines, not so good for readers. Especially if you are not an experienced copywriter (most of are not), this is the sure shot way to ruin your post.
Write your post in a fluid manner so that it is easy to read and understand, using simple words. You should use the TITLE & the META tags effectively to optimize your post for good SEO.
10. Leave something for the readers to think & take home
Many time I have seen good posts ending abruptly or with closed statements. Leave something for the readers to think & come back to comment on. A good way is to end with a direct question asking for opinions & feedback from your readers
Those are the 10 simple ways we have learned to make our posts popular. Dont go by how many tweets or re-tweets you have. If you look popular blogs like Gizmodo etc, you will see most posts with 300+ re-tweets. That is nice to have but these are not just organic tweets – meaning, normal users would just not come to these sites & re-tweet.
When you have 20000+ daily readers & above 200 people writing on your blog, like many of these sites have, getting those many re-tweets would seem quite natural to you.
