In my earlier posts on building up Google’s Page Rank for your blog or website, including a Layman’s Explanation on How Google Page Rank Drives Traffic, I have mentioned how important your web page rank is.
Google Browser Toolbar now has a built in tool to show the rank of a page the moment you browse it.
However, Google also experiments with its own logical programs on page ranks. So it should not surprise you if your website or blog page rank changes over night.
In most cases there is a perfect explanation to cases where the page rank goes down. Before I sum up the causes that can help a new blogger or a new internet business person to prevent their blog pages rank go down, I want to show 2 images which shows varying page ranks of the same page.
Take the example of Google’s home page. I recorded 2 different page ranks from the Google Toolbar of the same page. In the first one, it shows Google Home page at 7/10 rank, which is more or less the usual.

In the second, you will see that the Google’s Home Page is showing a Page Rank of 10/10. Obviously Google was experimenting with its PR algorithm.

If you are new to internet business, you should take page ranks seriously. And since we know that if you do not change your pages in a way that lowers your blogs page rank, page ranks should gradually increase over time.
Here are a top 10 mistakes that brings blogs & websites page ranks down:
- Too many outbound links – that is, if your website or blog links to suspicously large number of external web pages. Google gets suspicious of malpractices like link selling & paid posts & lowers the importance of the pages
- Too many inbound links from pages that are already suspicious in the eyes of Google – similar to the earlier point, Google sees this as a bad association & automatically lowers your page ranks
- Links to black listed sites – this include sites that have been consistently reported as spamming websites
- Links to fraudulent websites – this includes websites that have been reported as a hacker website & promotes malwares
- Too many links to the home page – ideally links should be spread over the various pages or posts
- Using “link follow” – Google mentions that all links should have a “No Follow” tag. Links that have a “Follow” tag is often interpreted as an attempt to promote sites
- Too many links from black listed & fraudulent websites – this also includes links from pornographic websites, sites that spread violence, hatred & generally websites that are not suitable for social viewing
- Links from websites that have duplicate posts – this also includes links from multiple mirror sites
- Links to or from websites that are created from Viral Website Software – these websites are created through software programs from content already available on the internet, thus duplicating content
- Website not with quality content, duplicate content copied from other web pages, content rarely updated by the owner or content reported as improper to DCMA & Google
These 10 Simple Page Rank Building Tips could help new bloggers & small business websites from being devalued by Google’s Page Rank. If you do not use the Page Rank Toolbar, you can still check your blogs page rank with the Free Page Rank Checker.
