Major Problems with Google Adsense – Drastic Drop in Adsense Clicks & Earnings
As of March 14 2009, publishers are screaming all over the internet about issues with Google Adsense. I am facing the same issues, like the other publishers. Alternatives to Google Adsense however continue to provide the same or even better results, helping me to make up for the loss from Adsense.
The problem is two fold (a) A drastic drop in clicks & (b) the revenue per click has gone down, so much so that many clicks now pay less than a cent!
The combination of low click rates & the low earning per click has been quite devastating on most of the publishers.
From all the reports on the internet & various publisher forums, these problems with Google Adsense earnings have been happening for quite some time now, especially after Google started experimenting with diverse advertising models.
Balancing your advertising earning is one of the best ways to get through a situation where one of the advertising agencies fail. But Google Adsense have continued to provide extremely relevant contextual ads with a fair earning per click, for a long time. For many publishers Adsense has been the only source of making money from blogs.
I have also noticed a lot of Google’s proprietory products in Adsense ads nowadays. Google has been pushing Picasa, Google Docs, Google Checkout & Google Toolbar a lot more. Such ads had mostly been used as “backup ads” for situations where there were no contextually relevant ads.
If that were true, then the situation means that Google does not have enough advertisers to work with. The other reason could be the sad state of the economy, where many publishers & advertisers have either cut down on online ad budgets or are looking for alternative advertising (like CPA ads).
While Google has been a life changer for millions of online publishers helping them make millions of dollars from Blogs, they continue to have a very poor focus on their publishers. Without a proper help desk or a customer rep to address concerns or issues, Google remains completely shut in explaining their often absurd decisions.
In the most recent example, Aaron Greenspan, a long time Adsense publishers, won a legal battle with Google where his Adsense account was allegedly suspended without paying out his dues. Huffington Post mentions the struggle which every Adsense publisher may have to go through in some form or another, looking for some help from Google Adsense teams.
The issue in Aaron’s case was he was alleged to have been involved in “click fraud“, though Google had no logic or reason to convince the judge that it was true, or that Google has a fool proof way of detecting the frauds! That puts every publisher in risk of being banned from Adsense program by a mistake on Google’s part.

Overall, it appears adsense revenue is slipping.
I have noticed the same things, adsense earnings are down.Nothing else to do than find additional income streams. One would think it is in Google´s best interest to get this problem fixed as soon as possible because adwords/adsense is a probably a major income stream for them.
Adsense does not perform well on marketing / selling websites. And they seem to promote a lot of their own products lately which anyway are so popular that it reduces the CTR when they show up on your sites.
