Here are some interesting statistics on the world’s internet usage patters compared to the respective populations. The data is published in March 2008 by Miniwatts Marketing Group. According to the study, Asia has the largest number of Internet Users with 37.6% , followed by Europe with 27.1% & coming in 3rd with 17.5% is North America . The total population of Internet Users across the world is estimated to be about 1,400 million in March 2008.

1. The top 10 languages that are used by the world internet users – English at 30.3% , Chinese at 16.6% & Spanish at about 8.7% . Of the European languages, French has 4.7% users, German coming in second with about 4.5% & Italian coming in third with about 2.4% users.

2. Growth of internet users – The data shows growth in the number of internet users from 2000 through March of 2008. Middle East has grown the largest with about 1177%, second comes in Africa with 1030% growth followed by Latin American & Caribbean population with about 660% growth between 2000 & 2008.

Even though some of the continents & countries has shown massive surge in both internet usage & usage penetration, the data should be used with some caution when planning for commercial sites or for advertising. Many of these countries are black listed for internet frauds & illegal commercial operations. African countries rank highest amongst them.
